Women's Eagles Clinch Play-off Berth

wbasketballMETRO VANCOUVER, BC
(February 10, 2012) – In a rare Thursday evening home game, the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Men’s and Women’s Eagles played host to their fellow feathered friends, the Langara College Falcons, in front of a large home crowd.

The Women’s Eagles took to the court first and played an aggressive match taking the game 29 – 26 into the half. However, the Eagles faltered slightly losing an eleven point lead mid-way through the third quarter en route to a photo finish in the dying seconds of the game with a final score of 62 – 64 in favor of the Falcons. “We played a full game but lost that lead when Langara caught up to us multiple times at the free-throw line,” stated Assistant Coach Emily Wright. “They went on a 10 – 0 run with 7 of those points coming from the free-throw line.”

Despite the Langara surge in the third quarter, the Eagles held the turnovers to 17 and have been consistently below the twenty mark over the course of the past three games. The Eagles have also shot 29 for 38 from the free-throw line and are shooting 43% from the field goal area over the past few games. Second-year center, Samantha McPhail (Vancouver) continued to be a dominating presence for the Eagles tallying 14 points and 12 rebounds while teammate and second-year guard, Anna Work (Everett, WA) was not far behind with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals to add to her stats. First-year guard, Cassandra Micona (Mission) also added to the Eagles close match with 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Although a loss, the point differential was not enough to un-seed the Eagles from capturing a Provincial Championships spot.

The Eagles host the University of Northern BC (UNBC) Timberwolves for their last home game and last regular season game on Saturday, February 18th. The Women will tip-off at 6:00pm and the Men take to the court at 8:00pm.
