FIND | Kwantlen's Foundations in Design certificate program LogoEffective March 1, 2010, the Interdisciplinary Design Studies (IDDS) program was renamed to Foundations in Design (FIND) in order to more accurately reflect the content of the program which is based on the four cornerstones of exploration, self-diagnosis, transition and fundamental skill development.

"My time in this program has truly been the happiest of my life. IDDS has shown me that I am meant to be a designer, and just as importantly, I made some amazing friends along the way."

Alejandra Horsley, 2010 graduate of Interdisciplinary Design Studies, and now a student in Kwantlen's Interior Design degree program.

"I will take many things away from this program: TIME MANAGEMENT being a huge one. I also learned so much about the world of design and really appreciate all this program did for me."

Ali Randa, 2010 graduate of Interdisciplinary Design Studies, and now a student in Kwantlen's Graphic Design for Marketing degree program.

"I will take away an awesome portfolio and essential skills to get me into the schools I want."

Andreas Eiken, 2010 graduate of Interdisciplinary Design Studies, and now pursuing Environmental Design at the Ontario College of Art & Design.

"IDDS was an excellent portfolio builder for me. The program provided me with the knowledge and skills that I needed to go further in the design discipline I'm most interested in. It created a great portfolio which helped me qualify for the Graphic Design for Marketing Program here at Kwantlen. I would definitely recommend IDDS to anyone interested in going into the field of design."

Cheryl Goeres, graduate of Interdisciplinary Design Studies, and now a student in Graphic Design for Marketing.

"Interdisplinary Design Studies gave me the oppurtunity to be in higher contention for a seat at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. I'm now entering my dream school with the foundational skills I received in the IDDS program. From colour theory and design experimentation to layout and composition, I've gained new skill sets that will carry me into my future. IDDS gave me the chance to make new discoveries about various mediums, methods and processes. Furthermore, it opened up my mind to numerous possibilites that I never could have imagined."

Jenna Brown, IDDS Graduate and now a student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design

"For me, an exchange student, who has studied design for two years before IDDS, the program was more of a substantiating experience that improved and solidified my skills and capabilities as a developing designer. I never would have thought I’d be doing that much cutting and pasting during IDDS, but I guess that is cause it’s one of the fundamental ways of design.

Besides that I think the most valuable course I took was Design Exploration. Exploring myself as a designer, my future plans and goals and mind mapping some of the basic questions regarding design, really made me feel comfortable and satisfied with the path I have chosen to invest in. In a more and more globalizing World, and for an international student, learning the design vocabulary is extremely important and what better way to learn it than through IDDS!"

Essi Virolainen, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland

Tamiko Coupland

"After spending time in science in another university, I finally realized that a career in design was what I really wanted. Having little art background, I needed a program that would teach me the basics of design before committing to a 4-year degree.

The IDDS program provided me with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and explore the various design disciplines open to me. I was able to build a comprehensive portfolio which will be helpful in my pusuit of additional education. The program also promotes an environment where you learn from great teachers as well as from your peers.IDDS is certainly an excellent starting point for people planning to go into design."

Catherine Chong, alumna of Interdisciplinary Design Studies.

"I came to Kwantlen for my program because it's recognized and well-respected throughout not only the province, but the country as well. I've been able to enjoy a broad spectrum of projects in graphic, fashion and interior design. The faculty is welcoming; the one-on-one time with instructors and the small class sizes are really helpful."

Fiona Samson, alumna of Interdisciplinary Design Studies.

Fiona Samson Testimonials

"I transferred into the IDDS program in the second semester of 2009. I wasn't sure what to expect from this program since design has never been my primary focus. I found the program very beneficial in developing my skills as a young designer. The classes focus on how design affects our world and our society today and in the future- the importance of innovation and constantly considering the bigger picture. Gaining this knowledge and relevant experience has opened my eyes to the design world and its endless opportunities. I am looking forward to the journey ahead in my education and feel IDDS has sparked this excitement."

Maddie Handy, a Kwantlen marketing/advertising student who took IDDS classes as part of the breadth requirements

"The IDDS program prepared me for my future in design; it helped me define my direction and allowed me to better understand the key elements involved in the design process ... Courses such as Design Methods and Materials taught me to use the elements and principles of design to understand the design process in a holistic way. Designing for Humanity allowed me to create well thought out design solutions with respect for my market and the sustainability of the earth. IDDS teaches students to design for a better tomorrow."

Caitlin Butcher, IDDS Graduate and now in fourth year in Kwantlen's Fashion Design and Technology Degree Program

"I would say Kwantlen was the right choice for me, but before going to any school do your research. Be proactive! It’s your life, your education."

"I really enjoyed IDDS because it gave me the opportunity to know what design really is. I also had lots of fun exploring the different areas of design that we studied. I now have awesome pieces to put in my portfolio and can speak the language of design.

IDDS helped me decide where am going next. I now have a better understanding of what careers are in the field of design. Not only did I learn lots, but, I made some good friends that are interested in art and design like I am."

Kelsey Lacroix, alumna of Interdisciplinary Design Studies.
