Frequently asked questions about the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

Thank you for your interest in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. Listed below are answers to the most frequently asked questions. Students must apply separately for the September and January intakes.

How many intakes does Kwantlen Polytechnic University offer?

There are two (2) intakes per year. You may apply for the September intake during the first week of November (one week only). You may apply for the January intake during the first week of March (one week only).

Does Kwantlen Polytechnic University keep a wait list from year to year?

No, you must reapply during the first week of November or the first week of March only.

Does Kwantlen Polytechnic University offer the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Diploma as well as the Degree and what is the cost?

No, Kwantlen Polytechnic University only offers the complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program. This program takes 4 years to complete. At present, the approximate cost is $40,000. LPN’s would be required to complete the 4 years as Kwantlen does not have a bridging program.

When do my documents have to be in to Kwantlen Polytechnic University?

For September: You are given the first three weeks of November to submit all documentation.

For January: You are given the first three weeks of March to submit all documentation.

(Applications that do not have document(s) submitted by this third Friday will be considered abandoned).

Official Transcripts (documentation) must be submitted in a sealed envelope from the high school or issuing institution. All post secondary transcripts must be accompanied with a completed Transfer Credit form, available at any Admissions offices.

****Late documentation by postal mail or in person will NOT be accepted.

What are the required academic prerequisites?

Mathematics requirement:

Principles of Mathematics 11 or equivalent with a grade of C (Math 12 C) or,

  • Kwantlen Courses: ACPM 0082, ABEM 0082, PSPM 1082, ABEM 0011, MATP 1011, MATH 0093/1093, MATQ 1099 or MATH 1100 University transferable level

Science requirement:

Applicants must meet Group 1 or Group 2 requirements.

Group 1:

  • Biology 12 or equivalent with a grade of C+ (blended grade with provincial or classroom grade whichever is higher) or, Kwantlen Courses: ACPB 0096, ABEB 0096, ABEB 0012, PSPB 1096, BIOP 1012, or BIOQ 1099 (may or may not transfer to another institution).

AND Chemistry 11 or equivalent with a C+ (Chem 12 C) or,

Kwantlen Courses: CHEM 0094/1094, or CHEQ 1094

OR

Group 2:

  • BIOL 1110 or equivalent with a grade of C

English requirement:

One of the following:

  • English 12 with a B (blended grade with provincial or classroom grade whichever is higher) or
  • Kwantlen Courses: ENGQ 1099, ABEE 0091, ENGP 1091, ABEE0092, ABEE 0097, ENGP 1097 with C
  • EPT or an LPI Essay score of 30 – Level 5, (ELST 0381 & 0383 B), TOEFL IBT 86 or higher (no score less than 20) or IELST 6.5 or higher (no band below 6) or,
  • ENGL 1100 level or equivalent with a C grade

I am a mature student; do the same prerequisites apply to me?

Yes, all students who have graduated from high school, and mature students 19 years of age and older, applying to the Nursing program must have completed all of the academic prerequisites prior to the application period. High school courses do not have an expiry date. Official Transcripts (documentation) must be submitted in a sealed envelope from the high school or issuing institution. All post secondary transcripts must be accompanied with a completed Transfer Credit form, available at any Admissions office.

What do I need to submit if I am currently in high school?

You must submit an interim transcript, in a sealed envelope from your high school, showing you are currently registered in or will be registered in the prerequisites. Documentation must be submitted by the third Friday of November for the September intake. If you are applying for January, you will have until the third Friday of March to submit all relative documentation. If the interim transcript (sealed in an envelope from your high school) is not received in the admissions office by 16:30 of the third Friday of the applicable month, your application will be abandoned. In mid May, interim high school grades will be reviewed to ensure that the required academic prerequisites have been met. Failure to meet the specified prerequisites, at that time, will result in making your application to this program ineligible.

How does Kwantlen Polytechnic University determine who receives a seat?

The number of applicants to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program far exceeds the number of available seats. As a result, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program will admit qualified applicants through two selection processes:

1. Computer generated random selection.

2. Point system:

Variable points will be awarded for such criteria as:

Geographical location - 2 points

Persistent application to the program – 1 point for each intake, after your first qualified application to the BSN program (maximum of 2 points)

1 point for Biology 1160

1 point for Biology 1260

1 point for English 1100 level (may be transferred from another institution)

1 point for English 1200 level (may be transferred from another institution)

Points for (2) university transferable electives (may be transferred from another institution) to a maximum of 2 points

In order to be considered for point allocation, the above courses must be completed by the following deadline, which is, December 30 for the September intake and April 30 for the January intake. If any courses have been completed at another institution, official transcripts (in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution) along with the “Request for Transfer Credit Form” (available at any Admissions office) must be submitted to Kwantlen Polytechnic University by the 15th of the month following completion deadline of the course(s).

When will you notify students whether or not they have a seat?

Students will be advised by mail by the end of April for the September intake, and the end of August for the January intake.

Are there any courses that I can take while I wait to get into the Nursing program?

  • One English 1100 level course, One English 1200 level course with a minimum grade of C.
  • Biology 1160 and Biology 1260 with a minimum grade of C.
  • 2 University transferable electives, with a minimum grade of C.

If I take any of the above courses, will I need to repeat them once I get a seat in the program?

No, by completing these courses outside of the program, your course workload will be greatly reduced.

If I have taken any of these courses at another institution, what do I do?

You must apply for Transfer Credit. Submit your official transcript, in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution, and complete the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form, available at any Admissions office.

When do I complete my Standard First Aid with CPR level C and Immunization Form?

Upon notification of a seat, you will be given a deadline to complete these requirements.
