Lu Allan

Lu has been teaching in the SETA program for 13 years. She brings to the program a wealth of experiences teaching diverse students of all ages. Her "love" has always been to explore the challenge of teaching learners who are non-verbal and have multiple challenges. In her 25 years of teaching, Lu has supported learners in both segregated and inclusive environments and readily sees these experiences as instrumental in building her foundational beliefs about education, inclusion and self concept. Lu has three beautiful children of her own and will often relate their learning to the content of the course. During her time with SETA, Lu has taught a number of the courses required for completion for the SETA Certificate.

Bob Basil is a communications expert with a history of success in business, publishing, and academia. He moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1996 after spending his early career in the United States. Basil is a member of Kwantlen’s Applied Communications Department and teaches “Writing in the Specialized Workplace” to students in the SETA program. He received his BA in English from SUNY/Buffalo and an MA in English from Stanford University.

Bill teaches “Change and Development”, “Working With Students” as well as “Overview of Curriculum for Inclusive Schools” in the SETA Program. He has been employed for many years in the public school system as a classroom teacher and as a member of District Special Education services supporting students from Kindergarten to grade 12. Bill’s professional interests include the melding of mainstream and special education practices and exploring the complementary roles and responsibilities of classroom teachers and special education assistants. He is committed to the belief that all children can be successful in school if provided with appropriate instruction, supports and appropriate curriculum. Bill has a B.A. in Psychology from UBC as well as teaching certification and a Graduate Diploma in Special Education from Simon Fraser University.
Brenda Fossett, B.Ed., M.A., BCBA

Brenda is a doctoral candidate at the University of British Columbia who teaches Augmentative and Alternative Communication in the SETA program. Prior to beginning her doctoral program, Brenda taught deaf children with developmental disabilities at the BC Provincial School for the Deaf in Burnaby, BC. Brenda is also a private consultant providing support to children in home, school, and community contexts.
Kelly Paddock

Currently a Vice Principal in SD #35 (Langley), Kelly has worked in the public education system in British Columbia for the past 27 years, both in special and regular education. Her recent work has been in School District #36 (Surrey) as an Integration Support Teacher for students with special needs and as a Special Education Helping Teacher. Kelly has been an instructor in the SETA program for five years. Having worked closely with many Teacher Assistants in both self-contained classrooms for students with special needs and in support of inclusion in the regular classroom Kelly brings her "in the trenches" experience and insight to her lessons at Kwantlen.

Allan completed a BA (Psychology) at the University of Lethbridge. He received a certificate from UBC to teach students who have an intellectual disability. Allan is a member of the British Columbia College of Teachers. He has a certificate in conflict resolution (Justice Institute of British Columbia). Allan’s MA (Educational Psychology and Special Education) is from UBC. His academic interests include person-centered philosophy, and the role of care in communication. Allan has worked for many years with individuals who need support to participate meaningfully in their community.
Sylvia Woodyard

Sylvia Woodyard is inspired herself each class by the motivation, creativity and diversity of the SETA students and her colleagues on faculty. She teaches Principles of Observation, Positive Behaviour Support, Person-Centered Practice and Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder; in addition, she coordinates SETA practicum. Sylvia has worked in the community living and special education fields since 1981 in various capacities, including one of her most profound experiences, participating with a team to create homes with and for individuals who left a segregated life in the provincial institutions. She has worked in the capacities of caregiver, coordinator and manager in the community living field, and has worked as a behaviour consultant to adults and children within residential and school settings. Sylvia has her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology from Trinity Western University (1988), and is due to complete her Masters of Education in Workplace and Adult Learning by the end of 09 (University of Calgary).
