Do you know...
- why Canadians know more about Barak Obama than their own prime minister?
- why people are increasingly addicted to social networking websites like "Facebook"?
- why most children born in North America are born on Tuesday?
- why girls as young as 8 are on a diet?
- why Aboriginal youth have a suicide rate that is about 6 times that of non-Aboriginal youth in Canada?
- why many brand name products are produced in countries like Mexico, China and India?
- why global hunger continues to exist, despite the fact that the world produces enough to feed everyone alive today?
Welcome to Sociology, the discipline that will help you answer these and many other questions about the Canadian and global communities!
By taking Sociology courses at Kwantlen, your learning will be relevant to your life and help you understand important social issues affecting you and the lives of others in both the local and global communities. In other words, Sociology enhances your social and cultural literacy, and raises your awareness of issues of social justice, thus contributing to your personal and professional growth. And regardless of which career path you choose, a background in Sociology will provide you with the resources that help you on your way and connect you to your work.
The Sociology Department offers courses in core areas of the discipline as well as various specialized courses with a Canadian or a Global focus. Starting in January, 2011, we will offer an exciting new four year degree program: Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology. In addition, we offer a four year Bachelor of Arts, Minor in Sociology which students can complete as part of a Double Minor Program at Kwantlen, and a two year Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology. Sociology courses also make excellent electives to supplement programs in other disciplines.
