Study Skills Workshops
Workshops are offered to all students throughout the academic year. Students can contact the Counselling Department on any campus for information related to dates and times of workshop offerings. The workshops aim to prepare students with the requisite skills for academic achievement, including: time management, note-taking, essay writing, reading comprehension, and test taking strategies.
Photocopying Assistance
Services for Students with Disabilities may offer a limited amount of free photocopying privileges to students who have photocopying costs directly related to a ‘print disability.’ Students who require note-takers or who need material copied for reader services may request this service. Students must discuss their photocopying requirements with their Disability Advisor. Services for Students with Disabilities cannot cover photocopying costs for reserved readings.
Tutoring Assistance Through a Canada Study Grant
The program is designed to provide one-on-one tutorial support to students with disabilities who may have difficulty adjusting to academic standards. The primary goal of the program is to assist students in developing new academic skills and strategies; strengthen existing academic skills; help students develop greater academic independence; and increase the likelihood of academic success. Refer students to Services for Students with Disabilities for applications for future assistance. Students may apply for tutoring through the Canada Study Grant or receive tutoring services through Kwantlen Polytechnic Universities Learning Center : http://www.kwantlen.ca/learningcentres.html
Note-Taker Volunteers
Volunteer note-takers are sometimes required for students who have difficulty taking notes. Note-takers are usually sought in the same class in which the student is enrolled. If this accommodation is requested, instructors should ask in class if there is anyone interested in volunteering as a note-taker for a student who is unable to do so independently. Volunteers are then referred to a Disability Advisor to make photocopy arrangements. Note takers are not paid.
Readers
Readers are required to assist in providing printed material in audio format to visually impaired and/or print impaired students. This service is used when a required text, journal, or summary must be understood. Readers are also utilized as an exam accommodation when text readers or audio text is not available.
Scribes/Access to Word Processing
Some students with physical disabilities may require assistance with the transcription of verbal information into written form. Scribes are also used to assist students with learning disabilities who have difficulty with the mechanics of essay writing within the context of an essay exam. When a student has sufficient word processing skills, Services for Students with Disabilities provides access to a computer instead of a scribe.
EQUIPMENT
Technical/Adaptive Equipment Availability
Services for Students with Disabilities stores technical and adaptive equipment in the Library’s Audio/Visual Department on each campus. Students may loan out and/or access specialized equipment such as: customized laptops; Braille; scanners; screen-reading and large-print computers; spell checkers, digital recorders, and other.
Student Procedure for Equipment Loan/Use:
- Students must first discuss their equipment request with Services for Students with Disabilities Disability Advisor or Learning Specialist and specify the length of time and reason for the request.
- If the request is approved, Services for Students with Disabilities notifies A/V of the request and directs the student to the Library.
- Student signs out equipment through A/V according to the specific terms designated by Services for Students with Disabilities.
Note: A student must hold a valid Kwantlen student card in order to loan equipment. It is the responsibility of the student to replace lost or damaged equipment. Students may obtain assistive equipment through a provincial service established to assist adults with physical disabilities and/or sensory impairments through the use of specialized adaptive technology. Services and equipment are available on-loan to full- and part-time students attending post-secondary institutions.
