Services for Students with Disabilities
Mission Statement
Kwantlen Polytechnic University promotes a barrier-free environment that facilitates equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. Kwantlen provides physical, academic, and social access for students with disabilities by working to eliminate physical, course and program, policy, information, technological, and attitudinal barriers.
Purpose
The role of the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Department is to:

Contribute to equitable, integrative and inclusive policy.

Create disability awareness at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Provide individual accommodation and support services.

Work in a consultative capacity with the various faculties, departments and administrative bodies on campus to support services and program initiatives relating to disability issues.

Establish leadership in the identification and resolution of issues concerning access to post-secondary education.

Facilitate the transition of students with disabilities from high schools, programs, and the work force to the University.

Recommend improvements for physical accessibility of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Promote student assistance through the support of volunteer and government funded programs.

Increase accessibility in the classroom through accommodations such as sign language interpreting, captioning, note taking, etc.

Coordinate the adaptation of exam accommodations where appropriate, such as extended exam time, alternate format, customized laptop, etc.

Obtain specialized and/or adaptive equipment on loan, e.g. variable speed tape recorders, telephone devices for the deaf [TTY], assistive listening systems, screen-reading and large-print software for laptop computers, scanners & Braille, etc.

Audit campus accessibility.
